Annadan (Food Relief):

Sharing food is an integral feature of India`s ancient Vedic culture, so much so, that it was customary for the householders to regularly invite guests to their home for dinner. And legend has it that an unspoken law of attithi naryana 'treating the unexpected guest like God' pervaded far and wide. In fact, it was not unusual for the husband of the house to go out into the village streets and call out: 'Is there anyone hungry? My wife has cooked dinner. All hungry people, please come and eat.'

The pious kings of the Vedic age were even more charitable. These highly responsible Kings saw all living beings as 'citizens of the State.' During the reign of the great Monarch, Pariksit Maharaj, it is said that even trees were not neglected, what to speak of the animals and birds – everyone received their quota of food and shelter from the King.

Such descriptions of broad concern and compassion are a stark contrast to the values of a modern day 'Me' society, where the rule seems to be, 'Everyone for themselves.' Srila Prabhupada specifically instructed his grhastha disciples to live by the Gaudiya Vaisnava tradition of hospitality.

'Anyone can afford to perform this sankirtana yajna,' he explained. And result: 'Simply by liberal distribution of prasada and sankirtana the whole world can become peaceful and prosperous.'

Help us Feed the Hungry worldwide !

The Annadan program is an attempt to revive that ancient culture of hospitality by uniting the people of the world with food and spiritual education. Purified Food (Prasadam) is by far the best communicator.
